Waterproofing in a Surrey Property

A homeowner in Camberley, Surrey, got in touch with Peter Cox as they had a below ground space that was suffering from recurring damp problems. They wanted a waterproofing system installed that could protect the property long term.

A Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) qualified surveyor attended the property and carried out a waterproofing survey in order to fully understand the requirements. The survey process will include an external and internal inspection of the property.

After the site visit the surveyor then provided the client a detailed specification for waterproofing based on their requirements for the below ground space.

As it was part of the home and the space was used for habitable living, they required the highest level of protection. This meant that the waterproof system needed to meet the requirements set out in British Standard 8102 - which provides the benchmark for below ground waterproofing.

The homeowner wished to go ahead with the design put forward by the surveyor, using a type C waterproofing system that is used to deal with water management.

In accordance with BS8102:2022, our surveyor designed a basement waterproofing solution that would protect the current basement from water ingress, and allowed for extension in the future to coincide with the client’s plans to develop the property further in future.

Because the client was living in the property while works were being carried out, we took all the necessary steps in order to reduce disruption and prevent any potential health and safety issues.

The waterproof membrane system was installed directly onto the walls and floors, with a perimeter channel at the wall floor joint. This channel then connected to a sump pump located in the floor flab. This system depressurises any moisture which is then channeled through to the sump pump by the perimeter drainage system. The sump pump then removes moisture away from the property, maintaining a completely dry internal space.

Once installed, plasterboard, plaster and final finishes can be carried out. This creates a dry and habitable space ready for the client to be able to use as they wish.

Typically waterproofing systems designed to BS 8102 come with a 10 year guarantee, providing owners with the long term peace of mind their property is protected.

Final thoughts

Waterproofing systems can be uniquely designed for all manner of spaces, but it is always essential to use a CSSW qualified surveyor who is experienced in basement waterproofing.

The local CSSW qualified surveyor said "waterproofing a below ground space is a great way to prevent damp and turn unused areas into habitable living space, something that can add a lot of value to a property in Surrey. The most important aspect is designing a system that can deal with everything that is thrown at it. This is why systems designed to BS 8102 are always recommended - with the added benefit of a long term guarantee.”
