Sheffield is one of the most famous cities in Yorkshire, gaining international notoriety for its steel production industry earning the nickname the ‘Steel City.’ The City always has a rich sporting history and has been home of the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C founded in 1857.
Located at the foot of the Pennines, Sheffield is known for its beautiful natural surroundings as well as its inner city victorian terraces, which can often be susceptible to building defects, such as blocked drains which can lead to moisture ingress and fungal decay.
The Peter Cox branch covering Yorkshire received a call from a homeowner concerned about a fungus attack she has seen in her basement. During our inspection the fungal attack was quickly diagnosed as dry rot, due to the large amounts of spores and large fruiting bodies. After establishing the size of a dry rot outbreak the first eradicating it, is to locate and stop the source of the moisture.
Our Surveyor suspected the source of moisture was caused from a defective drain, allowing water to enter the basement. To confirm this he recommended a CCTV drain survey to the client.
A CCTV drain survey will identify any potential drainage defects which may be contributing to dampness to the property. The findings will be detailed in a written report including a site plan and a link to any video files.
The drain survey uncovered multiple issues including broken hopper tops and defective joints on the outlets of gullies all resulting in water loss. It was this moisture that was penetrating into the basement.
Peter Cox then undertook these repairs, excavating and replacing the drain components as required. With the drain works completed the source of moisture fuelling the dry rot outbreak had been stopped and the Peter Cox team were able to carry out the necessary dry rot treatment plan to fully eradicate the fungal decay. By repairing the drains it would prevent future moisture ingress and future dry rot outbreaks.
If you suspect drainage problems are leading to moisture ingress in your property and are potentially causing damp and fungal decay issues please contact Peter Cox.
