Are Damp Proof Paints effective?

You may think that damp proof paints are a ‘wonder’ product protecting your home from all types of damp, however it is a bit more complicated than that. Before considering using a ‘damp proof paint’ you need to understand this is a generic term that covers a wide range of products and systems to deal with damp.

To give the solution the best chance, it is usually best to deal with the damp issue at source, wherever possible. 

If the issue is driving rain on a solid wall and the masonry is in good order, the ‘damp proof paint’ you require is in fact a masonry protection cream.This will protect masonry and stonework from wind driven rain, protecting the thermal efficacy of the wall by keeping it dry. 

For penetrating damp and salt damp there are ‘damp proof paints’ that cover up the problem, but ultimately the issue does not go away unless dealt with at source. Sooner or later, the paint film will be breached and as many of them seal moisture in, this may make matters worse.

Internally anti condensation paints can be used to create a thermal barrier between the cold wall and the warm moisture laden air within a property. These paints will in most instances stop growth of mould over an extended period.  But if the water producing issues are not dealt with and ventilation is not improved, you will still have a condensation issue, with visible water. 

There are even cementitious waterproof renders that are used as part of a waterproofing system for below ground spaces that create a barrier against penetrating damp. For this type of damp proofing you will almost certainly be looking at ‘below ground waterproofing to BS8102.’
