Whether it's converting an existing commercial basement or designing from the beginning a waterproof system, Peter Cox are market leaders in property preservation and are at the forefront of basement waterproofing.
Peter Cox design and install basement waterproofing systems to BS8102 standard, creating habitable spaces in existing damp and dark cellars as well as in new-build properties. It’s in the new-build area where important industry standards have been introduced as a result of previous poor design and installation.
Organisations providing insurance for new-build properties (NHBC and Premier Guarantee for example) have amended their standards and increased the level of protection contractors must provide for a building’s design to qualify for cover.
Due to significant failures, the NHBC has amended its ‘Standards for Waterproofing’ under chapter 5.4, which can be seen here.
Chapter 5.4 outlines several significant points, focusing on the importance of a good design and approach when constructing basements or below ground structures. It states:
- Type A & Type B; or
- Type A & Type C; or
- Type B & Type C
Type A systems - are barrier protection – such as an applied sheet of membrane, fitted internally or externally.
Type B systems - are structurally integral – such as waterproof concrete where the structure itself provides the waterproof barrier.
Type C systems - are drained protection – such as a cavity drainage membrane, which are very popular in the ‘refurbishment market’. We have over 30 years of experience in these systems.
As the standard requirement is that two systems should be ‘maintainable,’ which in practice rules out using Type A & Type B as a second system, especially once the retaining wall is
buried below tonnes of earth backfill.
The document also states that the installation process must be designed by a suitably qualified person. Peter Cox employ a number of CSSW qualified surveyors, which meet the necessary requirements.
At Peter Cox we design and install all habitable waterproofing with ‘Dual Systems’ that comply with the new standards. This means the installed waterproofing system will comply with BS8102, and carry a 10 year guarantee
From the initial design phase, to installation Peter Cox will cater for your specifications - making sure that the waterproofing system is safe and fit for purpose.
