The Derby branch of Peter Cox has completed a large basement waterproofing contract in this major redevelopment scheme for fashion retailer New Look in the heart of Nottingham’s shopping centre. The work involved the installation of extensive areas of both cementitious waterproof rendering and cavity drainage membrane lining to the below ground floor levels together with a full pump and sump drainage system.

At lower ground floor level and down the stairwell leading to the basement the walls were first prepared mechanically to remove any loose surface particles and then coated with a specialist vapour permeable waterproof render designed to create an impenetrable barrier against water ingress.

At basement level 600 metres of drainage channel bedded in pea shingle was laid around the wall perimeter and across the floor area leading to a total of 10 sump chambers. Approximately 1100 sq.m. of black studded polypropylene cavity drainage membrane was then laid over the floor. 750 sq.m. of clear cavity drainage membrane was used to line the walls, all fixed with self sealing plugs, and then 500m of 100 x 50 timber battens were fitted ready to take dry lining. 

This method of waterproofing using a studded dry lining membrane is designed to prevent any moisture from the surrounding ground from entering the structure by channelling it away safely into a managed water disposal system. Each of the 10 sump chambers was fitted with 2 pumps discharging outside the building and a further 2 larger pumps were installed in the sub basement at 8 metres below ground level.
