Turn your basement into a gym

No time to hit the gym for fitness? Worry not. You can make your own gym inside your home. If you have a basement that is lying vacant, get the right tools and equipment to create a gym that suits your fitness needs. You can transform the empty space in your home into a fitness center on your own, or with the help of a professional. Before you make a plan or get started, here are a few things you should consider.

Consider the size of the room

The size of the basement is the first thing you should consider for making your own gym. The minimum height of the basement should be 7 feet for it to be used as a gym. If you have a larger, wider and spacious basement, you can even install equipment over 7 feet in height. Otherwise, you can consider placing a treadmill, an elliptical cycle, a workout bench and maybe even a stepper.

Ventilation

Heating and ventilation are important factors to consider for setting up a gymnasium. The home gym should not be too warm or stuffy. It shouldn’t be too cold either. The right kind of temperature combined with fresh air supply is very important for the home gym. Make sure you have a ventilator or any other outlet that allows free flow of air into and out of the gym.

What kind of equipment to install

The height, the space and the budget you have should be considered to install the right kind of equipment in your home. Rather than just buying the usual gym equipment, go for multi-purpose gym equipment that fit in the basement space, without cramping it. Measure the size of the room thoroughly before you set out to buy the equipment.

Lighting

Proper lighting in the basement should also be set up. There is no hard and fast rule about lighting for your gym, but make sure there is enough lighting to allow you to work out without hurting yourself. You can go for bright lights or work out in dim lights, depending on your preferences.

Accessories

Spruce up your home gym a bit by decorating it with the right kind of accessories like inspiring posters, if you want any, and by setting up a music system. This needs thorough and safe electrical wiring. Wiring is also essential for getting most of the equipment like electrical treadmill to work. You also need wiring for lights.

If you do not want any wall paper, paint the basement walls in bright and energetic colors like red, a shade of yellow, green or simply white. Soundproofing is another important aspect you should consider if you want a home gym where you can work out without disturbing the rest of the house.
