ASK OUR TEAM OF EXPERTS FOR ADVICE
Q. We are getting a horrible odor (like an outdoor bin in summer, almost sewage like) from a small area of our skirting board in our lounge? It comes from an area of about 1ft long, the house is terraced and the wall of lounge that smells is the parti-wall between our lounge and next door. The smell really dominates the lounge when the windows have been shut, and we've had to have the window wide open and strong air fresheners plugged in, just to be able to tolerate sitting in the lounge. It is not near any drains and the wall doesn't seem damp. I'm worried there may be a mold or something behind the skirting board, but don't want to rip it off if I'm worng?? Thank you for any help or advice.

If it is a strong fungal smell, maybe like rotting vegetation it could be dry rot. I suggest that the offending skirting be removed, and you investigate what is behind. It could also be a broken drain. I hope this helps.
